You could of course put a Thien baffle in the DC with, say, a half inch wide slot. This would take out fine dust. AND a top hat before the fan with say a 1 1/2" wide slot to take out the coarse stuff with the decided advantage that the bin is easy to empty.

That helped improve the seal. WebHere is a video that compares the efficiency of two separators (dust deputy and Thien baffle). I suspect his Thien baffle is too large (diameter more than dust deputy) which may contribute to the poorer efficiency of the Thien (although that may be only part of the difference...I don't know if a cyclone is inherently more efficient than a Thien).
